New virus sending German spam email
We have received numerous reports recently of community members being inundated with German language email spam. We want to emphasize that if you are receiving spam emails, it does not mean that your computer is infected with a virus; it is most likely that this spam is coming from off-campus. These emails are the result of a newly released virus called Sober.Q, which infects a computer and then sends German language propaganda and hate mail to every member of that computer’s address book. This virus is also designed to send out spam mail that circumvents current spam filtering technology, including our own spam filter system called Postini. As time goes on, Postini should be able to improve their spam filters and block this annoyance. If you already have a Postini filtering account, the best thing to do at the moment is to simply delete the spam emails and wait until the problem is fixed. If you do not currently have spam filtration set up on your CC email account, please see our instructional webpage Here.
