Internet bandwidth issues and GoWEST

Windows Logo&Mac We wanted to let you know that we are aware of the Internet slowness issues around campus.  Web browsing is a bit slow, many library resources are taking a long time to access and download, web sites are timing out, etc.

These issues are occurring because we are utilizing 100% of our available bandwidth to the Internet from about noon to about 2:00 am every day.  Information Management is currently working on a deal with our Internet Service Provider (Time Warner Cable) to effectively triple our internet bandwidth, which should help considerably with these issues.  We don’t have an exact timeline on this increase, but it should be implemented within the next few weeks.

In the meantime, thank you for your patience.  Most times the site you are loading or PDF you are trying to download will eventually come up – it just takes longer since our bandwidth “pipe” to the Internet is so full.  Note that it’s important to wait for a file to download completely before attempting to print – this applies especially to library resources like E-Res.  Trying to print a file before it is done downloading will cause errors on the printer.  You might also consider restricting your recreational uses of the Internet (e.g., iTunes, streaming radio stations, gaming, etc.) in order that we collectively prioritize the academic, research, and work-related uses of the Internet.

Also note that this slowness issue only applies to Internet traffic, which is to say uploading or downloading content from off campus.  Network resources on campus (such as email, fileservers, Banner, and printing) are having no speed issues of any kind, and are in fact performing better than ever!

Since it is the end of the current pay cycle, you may also have had issues logging on to GoWEST.  If so, you will be able to access it for the time being by going to this link directly: https://gowest.coloradocollege.edu (rather than the normal way of just typing ‘gowest’ into the browser – that functionality should be back up within the next couple of days).
