Access the Network

&

Please follow these steps before setting up wireless.

Make sure you have your CC username and password before beginning this setup. Besides your computer, which must have current, up-to-date virus protection and the latest operating system updates installed (Click Here for instructions on securing your computer before you connect). You’ll also need a network patch cable. These general directions work for all computers and operating systems.

1. Unbox your computer, connect all of the appropriate devices, and plug it into a surge protector. We get frequent lightning storms in the spring and summer, and surge protection is a good idea! You can buy a surge protector from the CC Bookstore or from local retailers.

2. Connect the patch cable (also called the Ethernet cable or network cord) between your computer and the wall jack. The wall jack is usually blue or orange and often has a little picture of a computer next to it. Don’t plug it into your phone jack, or it won’t work, and neither will your phone! If you can’t tell which is which, test for a dial tone with your phone; only one jack is a phone line. Be careful, since these jacks and wires are delicate. It can take over two weeks to repair a damaged jack. The patch cable looks like a thick phone cord and has a plug on each end showing eight small wires. If you need a long patch cable (to reach around to the wall jack), you can buy up to 50-foot cables at the CC Bookstore or retailers like Just Computers, Computer Resources, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc.

3. Turn on your computer, open up a web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, etc.), and attempt to access any webpage. You will be redirected to the CC computer registration page. In case that page doesn’t come up automatically, the direct address of the registration page is https://computerregistration.coloradocollege.edu

4. Select the correct option for the type of device you wish to register (normal registration, gaming console, etc.).

5. Read the network usage agreement, and click next at the bottom of the page if you agree to the terms of use.

6. Fill in your username, password, dorm/office location, and phone number in the form provided.

7. The registration system will then have you download and run a small program (for instructions, please Click Here). This program checks your computer to make sure it has the latest security updates and updated antivirus software. If your computer is up-to-date and protected, you are all finished; otherwise, you will be presented with remediation instructions.

8. (OPTIONAL) Click Here to install Spybot Search and Destroy version 1.4, a free program which will help you combat the threat of spyware. After installing Spybot, update the definitions just as you would with an AntiVirus program, run the “immunize” function, and then scan your computer and remove the spyware it finds. Click Here for more information about Spybot and other anti-spyware / pop-up / spam options.

9. If you wish to use the wireless network at CC, please Click Here and follow the instructions for setting up your wireless card. You do not need to re-register after wireless setup; your wireless card was registered when you ran the registration process above.
