Setting up Ethernet for Mac OS X
This document explains how to connect Macintosh computers running OS X to the wired Colorado College Residential Network.
Physical Setup
To connect your Macintosh to the Ethernet port on your wall:
- Obtain a sufficiently long Ethernet cable. (Save your receipt. Sometimes the cable does not work properly, and you will want to exchange it for a new one.) Cables can be purchased at many local stores including the CC Bookstore, Wal-Mart, etc.
- Plug one end of the cable into your Macintosh’s Ethernet port, which is indicated by the symbol <…> on your Mac. The port resembles an oversized telephone jack.
- Plug the other end of the cable into the Ethernet port on the wall of your room or office.
- Now you are ready to configure your computer to access the Colorado College Network.
Configuring Mac OS X
1. Turn on your computer.
2. From the Apple Menu, select System Preferences, and select the Network icon. Click on the Built-in Ethernet connection, and then click Configure.
3. The Show drop-down menu should be set to Built-in Ethernet.
4. Click on the TCP/IP tab.
- The Configure: pop-up menu should be set to Using DHCP
- The DHCP Client ID should be left blank
- Search Domains should be left blank
- DNS Servers should be left blank
- All other fields will be filled in automatically by the DHCP Server. Click Apply Now when you are done.

5. You should note the Ethernet Address for future reference. To do so, click on the Ethernet tab, and then write down the Ethernet ID. You may need this if it is not filled in automatically when you register your computer.

7. Close the Network preference pane.
8. Click Here for instructions on registering your Ethernet address.
If after following all of the instructions in this document you are still having trouble, please go to the front desk of your dorm and sign up to have a ResNet staff member visit your room. Or, you may also call or visit the Help Desk (Barnes room 212, x6449) or send email to: HelpDesk@ColoradoCollege.edu.
