The Quick, Friendly, One-Page ResNet Setup Sheet

& Please follow these steps before setting up wireless.

Make sure you have your CC username and password before beginning this setup. Besides your networkable computer, which must have current, up-to-date virus protection installed, (Click Here for instructions on securing your computer before you connect) you’ll also need a network patch cable. These general directions work for all computers and operating systems. If you have any problems, Click Here for more detailed instructions and troubleshooting steps.

1. Unbox your computer, connect all of the appropriate devices, and plug it into a surge protector. We get frequent lightning storms in the spring and summer, and surge protection is a good idea! You can buy a surge protector from the CC Bookstore or from local retailers.

2. Get one of the ResNet CDs and follow the instructions on the CD to patch and update your computer. A CD was distributed to each dorm room — if you can’t find one, see if the dorm’s front desk has extras, and if not them, contact us at the Help Desk, x6449.

3. Connect the patch cable (also called the Ethernet cable or network cord) between your computer and the wall jack. The wall jack is usually blue or orange and often has a little picture of a computer next to it. Don’t plug it into your phone jack, or it won’t work, and neither will your phone! If you can’t tell which is which, test for a dial tone with your phone; only one jack is a phone line. Be careful, since these jacks and wires are delicate. It can take over two weeks to repair a damaged jack. The patch cable looks like a thick phone cord and has a plug on each end showing eight small wires. If you need a long patch cable (to reach around to the wall jack), you can buy up to 50-foot cables at the CC Bookstore or retailers like Just Computers, Computer Resources, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc.

4. Turn on your computer, open up a web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, etc.), and type in the web address for Colorado College (http://www.ColoradoCollege.edu). NOTE: You will not yet be able to see the Internet, only CC’s web site. You must first register your network adapter. If you can’t connect to the CC web site, Click Here and then click the link for your operating system for troubleshooting tips.

5. On the Colorado College web page that comes up (it will say “Welcome to CC!”), click the link after “Register Your Computer.” In case that page doesn’t come up automatically, the direct address of the registration page is https://nsg.coloradocollege.edu/ComputerRegistration/RegComp.asp.

6. When prompted, log in with your CC username (e.g., a_student) and password.

7. Read through the policy information page, and, if you agree to abide by the policies, click “I Agree” at the bottom.

8. On the next page, if you have up-to-date virus protection installed, click the check box near the top. If you don’t, first download Symantec AntiVirus from the network (click the link below or connect to the folder “shareware” on the server “STUDENT1″) or pick up a CD from the Help Desk (Barnes Science Center room 212, x6449). See this Web Page to download the program and for more information. You may lose network connection privileges if you do not keep your virus protection up-to-date.

9. Read through the rest of the page and fill in the appropriate information. The page should automatically detect your Ethernet number/address and put that into the box near the top. If it doesn’t, click the link to find out how to look up the Ethernet address manually.

10. After the next page finishes loading, you will need to release and renew your IP address. If you have Windows 2000 or XP, Click Here to release and renew automatically. Otherwise, Click Here for instructions on performing a manual release / renew.

11. (OPTIONAL) Click Here to install Spybot Search and Destroy version 1.3, a free program which will help you combat the ever-growing threat of spyware. After installing Spybot, update the definitions just as you would with an AntiVirus program, run the “immunize” function, and then scan your computer and remove the spyware it finds. Click Here for more information about Spybot and other anti-spyware / pop-up / spam options.
