Advanced Configuration for Windows XP
To connect to the Colorado College network, your computer needs to speak the same language – TCP/IP – as the rest of the network. This section tells you how to enable and configure TCP/IP.
1. Turn on your computer.
2. Log on with your computer’s Administrator account.
3. Click on the Start button, and select Control Panel.

4. In the XP Control Panel, select Switch to Classic View in the upper left corner.
5. Double-click the Network Connections or Network icon to open the Network Connections window. In the Network Connections window, right-click on the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties from the drop-down menu. (See below.)

6. You are now at the Local Area Connection Properties window, which lists the different services and network protocols installed for your Ethernet adapter. The adapter itself is listed in the Connect using area at the top. Your properties windows may look different than the one shown here because different Ethernet adapter manufacturers can install different components by default.

If Client for Microsoft Networks is missing:
- Click on Install
- Select Client
- Select Client for Microsoft Networks and click OK
If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is missing:
- Click on Install
- Select Protocol
- Select Internet Protocol and click OK
If QoS Packet Scheduler is present:
- Click on QoS Packet Scheduler
- Click on Uninstall to remove it
7. To configure your networking client, select Client for Microsoft Windows and click the Properties button. From the Name Service Provider drop-down list, select Windows Locator. Click OK.
8. To configure your TCP/IP settings, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the properties window and click the Properties button. On the TCP/IP Properties window, be sure the following defaults are selected:
- Obtain an IP address automatically.
- Obtain DNS server address automatically.

9. Click the Advanced button and select the IP Settings tab. It should look like the screen shot on the next page.
- If you have a gateway address listed under Default Gateways, select it and click Remove.

10. Click on the DNS tab. (See below.) The DNS server addresses area should be blank; select and remove any addresses you find there. Below that, select Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes. In addition, check the box next to Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix. Leave the DNS suffix box blank and check the box next to Register this connection’s addresses in DNS.

11. Click on the WINS tab. (See next page.) Select and remove any WINS address listed at the top. Check the box next to Enable LMHOSTS lookup. In the NetBIOS setting area, select the default, Use the NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server.
12. Click OK to return to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window. Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties window. If so prompted, restart your computer.
13. Click Here to return to the basic setup page, or Click Here for instructions on registering your Ethernet address.
