Setting up Ethernet for Windows XP
This document explains how to connect Windows XP Professional or XP Home Edition to the wired Colorado College Residential Network.
Physical Setup
To connect to the network, you need a computer with an Ethernet adapter installed. If your computer doesn’t have an Ethernet adapter, you will have to purchase one and install it or have it installed by a professional. Be sure to buy an Ethernet adapter that comes with XP drivers. You also need an Ethernet cable, also known as a patch cable. The physical connection is quite simple:
- Obtain a sufficiently long Ethernet cable. (Save your receipt. Sometimes the cable does not work properly, and you will want to exchange it for a new one.) Cables can be purchased at many local stores including the CC Bookstore, Wal-Mart, etc.
- Plug one end of the cable into your computer’s Ethernet port. The port resembles an oversized telephone jack.
- Plug the other end of the cable into the Ethernet port on the wall of your room or office.
- Now you are ready to access the Colorado College Network. Click Here for instructions on registering your Ethernet address. If you cannot get the registration page to load, Click Here to view the advanced ethernet configuration page for Windows XP.
If after following all of the instructions in this document you are still having trouble, please go to the front desk of your dorm and sign up to have a ResNet staff member visit your room. Or, you may also call or visit the Help Desk (Barnes room 212, x6449) or send email to: HelpDesk@ColoradoCollege.edu.
