Setting up a Cisco Aironet Wireless Connection on Windows

Colorado College supports wireless networking based upon the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN standard using Cisco access points running encryption and LEAP Authentication. In order to connect your PC to the CC wireless network, TigerNet, it must meet the following minimum standards:

  • PII 400MHz Processor
  • 64MB Ram
  • Windows 2000 or XP

Installing the Wireless Network Card:

NOTE : When you first turn your computer on after installing the wireless network card, you will probably see a window like the following pop up. Click the Cancel button. (You will install the drivers after Windows finishes booting up.)

Installing the Aironet Client Utility:

You must install the Cisco Aironet Client Utility (ACU) to configure your wireless card to work with the CC TigerNet. To install the Utility, download it from the Colorado College web site using your wired network and the links below, or check out a CD from the Help Desk (Barnes 212, x6449).

  • The Cisco software will continue to install, displaying various windows like the following:

  • When the software completes installing, you will be asked to reboot your PC. Click Yes .

Connecting to the Colorado College Wireless LAN:

Once the client configuration is complete and your computer has rebooted, a logon screen will appear. (See next page.) If you are on campus , please enter the same Username: and Password: that you use for computer and email access. Type “COLORADOCOLLEGE” in the Log on to box, and click OK to start the logon process. If you are off campus (i.e., NOT in range of the wireless network) , click Cancel , and you will log on to your laptop as normal.

After you click OK , you will see the following screen:

Once you have been authenticated, you will be connected to the Colorado College wireless LAN, and you should see an icon in the system tray next to the clock indicating your connection status:

Every time you use your wireless network card, you will be prompted for your username and password only once at the beginning of your session.

Registering the Network Card:
After you have installed the Cisco Aironet wireless adapter and the Aironet Client Utility, you must register the adapter’s Ethernet address to gain Internet access (if you’ve already registered your wired connection, your wireless connection was registered at the same time so you don’t need to do this). Just open up your web browser and go to a website – you will be redirected to the registration page. Then follow the directions to register.

Troubleshooting:

If you fail to connect to the wireless network after following these instructions, try these steps:

  • Make sure you entered the correct Username and Password.
  • Make sure you are on campus, within range of the wireless network (see if others can connect).
  • Visit the Cisco website for a great tool to troubleshoot any wireless connectivity issues. http://www.Cisco.com/public/support/wireless_launch.html .
  • Find out if your wireless card is functioning properly by launching the Cisco Aironet Client Utility. Click on the Status button to view your connection strength, firmware version, and a great deal of other information about your connection

  • Your Status window should show a Signal Quality of over 50%.
