Setting up an Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG or 2915 (Centrino) Connection on Windows

Colorado College supports wireless networking based upon the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN standard using Cisco access points running encryption and LEAP Authentication. In order to connect your PC to the CC wireless network, TigerNet, it must meet the following minimum standards:

  • PII 400MHz Processor
  • 64MB Ram
  • Windows 2000 or XP

GETTING STARTED

We recommend that you print these instructions or add to favorites/bookmark them.

Windows XP & 2000 users should make sure that they are logged onto their computer using an account that has administrator rights.

If you already have the following two highlighted icons in your system tray (bottom right-hand corner of your screen), then you may skip the installation instructions and go directly to Wireless Network Configuration.

DRIVER INSTALLATION

1. Using your existing network connection, download the appropriate driver by clicking on one of the link below. Save the file to your desktop or another easily accessed area.

WIRELESS NETWORK CONFIGURATION

Before configuring the wireless connection you must go to an area that has Wireless access. You should save or print out these instructions.

1. In order to join the wireless network, you must use the Intel PROSet utility to configure your wireless settings. To ensure that Windows itself is not doing this, right click on the wireless icon with a red X through it and then left click on View Available Wireless network.

2. The Wireless Network Connection will display. Click on the Change Advanced Settings link.

3. Ensure that the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings checkbox is Unchecked (empty). Then click OK.

4. The highlighted icon below is the Intel PROSet utilities icon. To configure the wireless card, double-click on the icon. (If you do not see this icon, you can also reach the Intel PROSet utility from the control panel (Start Menu > Control Panel > Intel PROSet utility).

5. You should now see the status display for your wireless card. Click on coloradocollege in the lower box, and then click on Configure.

6. Make sure the Profile Name reads coloradocollege, and click Next at the bottom of the screen.

7. The utility will now detect Colorado College’s network security settings. Click Next when it finishes.

8. Check the box to Enable 802.1x, and set the Authentication type to LEAP. Then check the button to “Use the following username and password”. Type your CC username into the User Name field. In the Domain field type coloradocollege. Then type your password (the same as your email password) into the Password and Confirm Password boxes. Click Next when you are finished.

9. You have now finished setting up your Intel Pro/Wireless network card. Click OK to connect to the Colorado College wireless network.

10. You will now be back to the first screen, but the configured Profile for Colorado College will appear in the top box now. Click Close to exit from this screen.

11. In the bottom right of your screen, you should now see the Intel Pro/Wireless icon turn green, yellow, or red depending on your signal strength.

12. Registering the Network Card:
After you have installed the Intel Pro/wireless adapter and configured the Utility, you must register the adapter’s Ethernet address (if you’ve already registered your wired connection, your wireless connection was registered at the same time so you don’t need to do this). Just open up your web browser and go to a website – you will be redirected to the registration page. Then follow the directions to register.
