In order to set up a POP client, you need to know which POP server you use to read mail. Colorado College’s Incoming POP server is securemail.ColoradoCollege.edu. To send mail, the Outgoing SMTP server is smtp.coloradoCollege.edu. Note that you can only send email from a POP client if you are on-campus or connected to CC via Virtual Private Networking (VPN). If you are off-campus and use another service provider (like Adelphia cable, DSL, AOL, etc.), you will need to use that service provider’s outgoing SMTP server to send email. You can receive POP email no matter how you connect to the Internet, as long as you have your CC username and password.Open Outlook Express. Click on Tools, then Accounts.

To add a new mail account, click on Add and then Mail…

Fill in your name. This will make it easy to identify the account, if you create more than one on your machine. Click on Next.

Fill in your CC email address and click Next.

Be sure to select POP3 for the server type. IMAP is available, but will NOT download your messages off the server. You do have a space limit, so the messages need to be downloaded. NOTE : POP email programs, unless you tell them otherwise, will download all of your email to your hard drive and remove it from the server . Your downloaded email will no longer be available from any other computer, including Outlook Web Access or the full Outlook program.
The Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server is: securemail.ColoradoCollege.edu. The Outgoing mail (SMTP) server is: smtp.ColoradoCollege.edu.
NOTE: If you are not on-campus, running VPN, or using CC’s modems (719-389-6889) then you must use the SMTP server of your Internet Service Provider. We have to restrict access to prevent SPAM email being relayed through our machines.
Click on Next.

Type in your username for the POP account name. If you want to enter your password each time, do not enter it in the Password box (recommended). Click on Next.

Click on Finish.

However, even though it says “Finish,” there’s still one more step. In Outlook Express, go to Tools and then Accounts. Select the Mail tab, click the profile you just created, and click Properties.

Click on the Advanced tab and then put a check in “This server requires a secure connection (SSL)” for the Incoming mail (POP3): server. Incoming POP mail is now encrypted, and you must tell Outlook Express to use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) for it work.

Once you’ve made sure your incoming mail will use SSL, click on Apply and then OK to exit the properties.
Make sure the “Leave a copy of messages on server”
box is unchecked. If this is checked your email will stay on the server and you will go over your allotted space quota. This can cause problems when you try to send mail, or try to access your mail. NOTE : If you uncheck “Leave mail on server,” your program will download all of your email to your hard drive and remove it from the server. Your downloaded email will no longer be available from any other computer, including Outlook Web Access or the full Outlook program.
Your Outlook Express client it now ready for use. Click on Send and Receive to get your mail, and post any outgoing messages. If you are using a modem, you can get your messages, disconnect from the phone, read and reply or compose new messages, then reconnect to the modem, and click on Send and Receive to post the messages.
