Frequently Asked Questions related to the DIGEST lists

All Faculty, Staff, and Students receive the associated daily digest. It is the only way many announcements are made.

& Can I access old digest messages?

Yes. Go to http://listserv.ColoradoCollege.edu/cgi-bin/wa.exe, and you can access all the archives.

& What are the digest lists?

There are 5 digest lists: EVENTS-L, FACULTY-L, STAFF-L, STUDENT-L, SALES-L. Faculty, Administrators, Support Staff, RA’s and First Year Mentors can post to the first four lists. Students who would like to post event information on one of the first four lists should ask the advisor associated with the event to post the announcement. To post to SALES-L you need to subscribe to the list. Please use the lists appropriately.

& How do I get a LISTSERV password?

You can get a LISTSERV password by clicking on this link. Once you fill out the form and click on the Register Password button, an email message will be sent to the address you supplied. It may take up to 10 minutes. You then need to reply to the message to activate the password. This prevents other folks from spoofing your email address and adding you to lists you don’t want. You may get to this same link by accessing a LISTSERV function that requires a password.

& How do I subscribe (or unsubscribe) from one of these lists?

Click on the link below to access a list of all mailing lists hosted at CC. You can click on any of the links to access the web page for that list. It will include the subscribe and unsubscribe options. You will need to use your LISTSERV password to access many of the functions on that page, such as subscribe, post to the list, or view list archives. Mailing Lists hosted at CC.

& When do I need to send an announcement to the digest?

Since all messages to the digest are collected for 24 hours, then put into a single message, then sent at 6 am, announcements need to be sent AT LEAST 1 DAY ahead of time. If the event is on Tuesday, and you want the announcement to be in Monday’s digest, it needs to be sent between 6 am Sunday and 5 am on Monday. PLAN AHEAD!

& How do I send to the different lists?

Put some combination of the lists in the To: line. On Exchange you click on the appropriate entry in the Global Address Book. If you are using the Exchange Web Access Client, you must type in the names separated by semi-colons.

& As a student how do I make a posting to the digest?

Postings to the all campus digest can be made by faculty, administrators and support staff. You need to ask one of these folks associated with the activity to post the message for you. (This restriction on posting was added at the request of students.)

& How often are Digests sent out?

The digests (events-l, faculty-l, admin-l, staff-l, student-l, sales-l) are sent out once a day at 6am. It is an automatic process that puts all the messages sent to these lists in previous 24 hours into a single message. If you forgot to send an item in time to make the digest, please contact the help desk (6449) for instructions.

& What are the FLASH lists?

FLASH messages can be sent to the faculty, staff, admin and student lists at any time. These messages are sent out only for SECURITY reasons or to detail OUTAGES (computers, phones, water spouts, etc.) They are of immediate importance and should be read carefully by all. Please contact the help desk (6449) or head of security to send a flash message.

& How do I respond to a posting in the Digest?

Look at the email address associated with the particular message of interest - it will be at the end of each message, or in the From: line for the specific message. Use SEND or FORWARD to respond, then enter the appropriate email address. If you use REPLY it goes just to the list owner, and all I do is add and delete users from the list.

& How do I include a document (Word memo, etc.) in a message to the Digests?

All messages to the DIGESTS must be in clear text. If you can’t see the text in the window you normally type into, then it won’t make it through the “digest” process cleanly. Document “attachments” cannot be included in mailings to the digest. The digest process destroys the headers necessary for folks reading their mail on exchange to see the document. If you want to include text from a previously created document, highlight the text and use “copy” and “paste” to include it in the message text window.
