How to tell which Operating System you have



If you need to know which version of Windows you have, follow these steps to find out in mere seconds (Note: If your screen looks different from those directly below, scroll down for further information on how to tell what version of Windows Vista you are using…)

Click the “Start” menu and select “Run”:

Type “winver” and click “OK”:

The Window that comes up will display everything you need to know about which version of Windows you have. In the example below, the computer has Windows XP Service Pack 2


Click the “Start” menu and type in the “Start Search” area:

Type “winver” and wait a few moments… a list of programs with that name will pop up toward the top. Since “winver” is the only program it will be the only program to show up at the top of the window - click on that program to bring up the Windows version information:

The Window that comes up will display everything you need to know about which version of Windows you have. In the example below, the computer has Windows Vista: Enterprise.


The easiest way to find out which operating system you have on your Macintosh is to look up at the Apple in the upper left corner.

If it’s a blue apple: then you have Macintosh OS X

If it’s a rainbow apple: then you have Macintosh OS 8 or 9
