Operating System Updates

& Windows Critical Updates and Macintosh Security Updates

*Please note that if the computer in question is a PC owned by Colorado College (so this does NOT apply to student computers and Macintoshes) and connected to the CC network (i.e. plugged in here on campus), our management software (Altiris) will automatically install all critical updates every Wednesday night. To make sure Altiris is installed on your computer, verify that the altiris icon shows up next to the date and time in the lower right corner of your screen:

If you do not see this icon, please call the Help Desk so that we can make sure it’s installed as soon as possible. If this icon is present, please leave your computer logged off but still powered on (at the “hit Ctl+Atl+Del to log in” window) every Wednesday night to ensure it automatically downloads all critical updates.

PCs (not owned by CC): go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install all Critical Updates. Particularly vital are the Blaster and Sasser worm and more recent security patches from Microsoft. You can also get there by clicking “Start”, selecting “All Programs,” and then “Windows Update”:

*** TIP: We highly recommend you turn on Automatic Updates so that your computer will take care of updating itself. It’s quick and easy to set up – Click Here for instructions. Note that this only applies to personal (i.e. non Colorado College-owned) computers.

Macs : go to the Apple menu and select “Software Update”. Install all security patches available:
Alternately, go to http://www.apple.com/support/ and download the patches.
