 Spybot Search & Destroy is a program developed to scan for, remove, and prevent spyware infections. It is a freeware program, which means it’s available for anyone to use (you do have the option of donating to the creators. If you would like to do so, see http://www.safer-networking.org for more information).This page will walk you through the process of downloading and using Spybot to protect your computer from Spyware.
First Click Here to download Spybot Search & Destroy (version 1.5)
Select “Run” or “Open”:
Select the language in which you would like to install Spybot:
Go through the installation steps as follows:
Be sure to select “Compact Installation”:
This is the critical part – make sure that both “User Internet Explorer protection” and “Use system settings protection” are unchecked. If left on, they can potentially damage your computer while you are installing legitimate software.
Click “Install” and then, when it’s done, “Finish”
The installation should have created a shortcut on your desktop, double left click it:
Read the small legal message, check the “Don’t show this message again” box, and then click “OK”:
Since this is the first time you’ve run Spybot, it will start with a wizard to help you set it up. Go ahead and click “Create Registry Backup”. It will seem like your computer is frozen for a few minutes while this happens, but be patient:
Once the backup completes, click “Next”:
Click “Search for updates”:
After a moment, you will be able to click “Download all available updates”. Go ahead and do so:
Wait a moment as it downloads updated definitions:
Now you will see the main interface of Spybot. The first thing to do is to immunize your system — click “immunize”:
*NOTE* you will want to immunize your system every time you update Spybot.
You will see a message tell you how many products are blocked, and how many additional protections are possible:
Click “Immunize”:
You will see this when the immunization has finished:
Now select “Search and Destroy” from the navigation menu on the left:
Select “Check for problems” and wait for it to finish scanning (this usually takes about 15 minutes):
Click “Fix Selected problems” to clean all the selected spyware off your computer:
It will ask you to confirm that you would like to delete the entries, click “Yes”:
It will tell you how many problems it fixed. Once you click “OK”, you can close Spybot Search & Destroy:
We recommend you open Spybot, click “Update” to download the newest definitions, immunize, and run a full scan at least once per month (or as needed).
